When your customers return a mattress, the easy answer is to send it to the landfill. Sleep for Change exists because there's a far better option. Our mission is to connect eligible returned and overstock mattresses from manufacturers and retailers to families and communities across the country that need them most. The usual alternatives don't get there: junk-removal services often end at the dump, and asking customers to donate them themselves puts the burden on them, so most of those mattresses are thrown away, too.
Our Founding Story
Sleep for Change was founded by Avocado Green Mattress, which spent over a decade building one of the country's most extensive mattress donation networks — partnering with more than 2,000 vetted nonprofits nationwide and donating 97% of eligible returned mattresses rather than sending them to landfill. That network, that infrastructure, and that mission now live here, in a nonprofit built to serve the whole industry. We're opening it to more brands and retailers over time as a deliberate, step-by-step expansion, because doing it right matters more than doing it fast.

Tax Documentation

Who Should Join
We prioritize natural and organic sleep brands and are methodically building a coalition committed to responsible returns and improved sustainability. We also welcome conventional mattress brands and retailers who want to do more with their eligible returns. In the end, the families receiving these lightly used and overstock mattresses do not require a certified organic supply chain or nontoxic certifications. They simply need clean, safe place to sleep.
What We Accept
We accept mattresses in clean, undamaged condition. Stained, soiled, or heavily worn mattresses can't be donated or submitted. If you're unsure whether your returns qualify, reach out, and we'll work through it with you.
We are actively developing end-of-life solutions for mattresses that do not meet donation standards. It is a hard and important problem.
